Agriculture has historically been one of the main sectors of activity in the municipality of Alboraia, due to the fertility of the soil and the high productivity. The municipality still maintains its agricultural tradition, although nowadays, the agricultural sector is not economically profitable for the people who work the market garden, due to the difficulties that buying and selling introduces in the smallholder farming market.
Alboraia’s agriculture is based on tuber crops, mainly tiger nuts, with their own designation of origin, potatoes and onions, and, to a lesser extent, vegetables. Traditionally, the market garden of the TM was occupied with crops such as tobacco, peanuts, corn and alfalfa, which have now become self-consumption crops, and more sporadically, flowers and ornaments.
This agricultural land makes up the majority of the municipal protected rural area, with 596.51 hectares of the TM. Protected land represents 70.2% of the land in Alboraia’s TM.
The Town Council, in its commitment to the promotion and improvement of agricultural activity in Alboraia, is interested in establishing synergies with companies/institutions with the aim of being able to develop European projects that respond to the needs of the sector.
La agricultura ha sido históricamente uno de los principales sectores de actividad del municipio de Alboraia, debido a la fertilidad de los suelos y la elevada productividad. El municipio sigue manteniendo la tradición agrícola, aunque actualmente, el sector agrícola no resulta rentable económicamente para las personas que trabajan la huerta, por las dificultades que introduce la compraventa en el mercado de la agricultura minifundista.
La agricultura de Alboraia está basada en cultivos de tubérculos, principalmente chufa, con denominación de origen propia, patatas y cebollas, y, en menor medida, hortalizas. Tradicionalmente la huerta del TM se ocupaba con cultivos como el tabaco, los cacahuetes, el maíz o la alfalfa, que actualmente han pasado a ser de autoconsumo, y más esporádicamente, flores y ornamentos.
Este terreno agrícola conforma, en su mayor parte, la zona rural protegida municipal con 596,51 ha del TM. El suelo protegido representa un 70,2% del suelo del TM de Alboraia.
El Ayuntamiento, en su compromiso con el fomento y mejora de la actividad agrícola en Alboraia, está interesado en establecer sinergias con empresas/instituciones con el objetivo de poder desarrollar proyectos europeos que den respuesta a las necesidades del sector.
